Saturday we drove up to North shore for the day. We went snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing at Shark's Cove and the Three Tables. We saw quite a few big fish and colorful coral. It was a beautiful day! Unfortunately Shark's Cove and Trace didn't get along very well. It's a little awkward getting into the water at this spot. Trace broke his toenail getting in and cut his knee getting out. He had blood running down his leg as we walked to the car that shocked all the passerbys. Three tables has a great beach with shade and easy entrance for swimming and boarding. A definite spot to revisit.
To give the knee a break, we drove to a sacred Hawaiian temple- Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau. So many vowels. This was a temple of sacrifice. Not a bad view to end your life. The beach we were looking down on is one of our favorites- Waimea Beach Park.
We finished North Shore with a trip to the most famous shaved ice shop in Hawaii- Matsumoto shaved ice. The line wraps around the store, while the shaved ice shop next door is empty. Trace was adventurous and got Azuki beans on the bottom of his cone- that's right it's a red bean from the far east that is boiled and sweetened. He wasn't a fan of the beans but the ice and flavors were fantastic- watermelon, sour apple, raspberry. I got the traditional vanilla ice cream on the bottom with pineapple, coconut, and lilikoi (passionfruit). Mmm... so good.
Trace is on call again this week. The other residents rarely get a page on their weeks while Trace gets called in 5-6 times a day. Lucky us! He got home last night at 10:30PM from doing a surgery on an ER patient and a few other ER visits. Then he got called in again at 4AM. Fortunately Trace is always willing, able, and happy.
At the end of dental school Trace was offered a spot to come back to OHSU to complete a Periodontal Residency (specialist in gum surgery) after his year in Hawaii. The program is 3 additional years with 3 more years of tuition. We have been going back and forth about what to do. This Hawaii residency has helped Trace decide to join a general dental practice next summer. So keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities for us.

You guys sound like you're having a blast. I wish we had a little sun over here :)
Yum....I wanna go there! No beans for me, but ice cream is good.
So do the patients get to choose who they want to work on him? Is that why he gets called in more, or did the other residents give Trace's number the hospital instead of their own? :) I will definitely keep my ears open here. Jason Walker said that for our population size of Pendleton, they could use a couple more dentists. Which sounds good to me. The kids would love it too! Keep having fun!
Aoki's Shave ice is good too, but we didn't try the beans, ice cream all the way. It is just down the block from Matsumoto's.
